Au bistro

Описание к видео Au bistro

One of my favourite chapters from "La vie quotidienne". The origin of the word "bistro" or "bistrot" (a small and typical Parisian restaurant) is still controversial. According to an urban legend the word would come from the russian "быстро" which means "quickly" because when the cossacks came to Paris in 1815 they wanted to be served as fast as possible, so they shouted this word. Unfortunately, linguists say the word "bistro / bistrot" is only attested since 1892 and therefore that etymology is wrong.
