Samarina's Wallachians: the Spirit of the Clan (Greece) Civilizations in danger

The Great Dance: At the time of Christ, the Vlachs were shepherds, isolated from everything else, living in almost complete autarky; they occupied the mountains of northern Greece. They were organized into close-knit clans with a strong desire to develop. They acquired new power when they became Roman citizens, and were able to expatriate and adapt to the point of becoming indispensable. They became brewers in Hamburg, jewelers in Vienna, furriers in Budapest, millers in Alexandria, financiers in New York, teachers in Athens... without ever really having lost their clan spirit. "The Great Dance" is the story of a man who now lives in the mountains of his ancestors. Once a year, his village organizes the Great Dance, which brings together all the Wallachians on the evening of August 15th, on the Samarina highlands.
