Mud Oven Construction For Popcorn | Primitive Technology | Mud oven Making
The construction of a mud oven for popcorn is a great way to enjoy this tasty snack with a unique, smoky flavor. Here's a step-by-step guide for the construction of your own mud oven:

Materials:
Clay
Straw
Fire bricks
Metal grate or screen
Water

Instructions:

Choose a level area with good drainage to build your mud oven.
Create a base by digging a shallow hole and filling it with sand. The base should be about 2-3 feet in diameter and 6-8 inches deep.
Mix clay and water to create a thick mud. The consistency should be similar to that of thick pancake batter.
Spread the mud mixture over the sand base to a thickness of about 6-8 inches.
Insert straw into the mud layer about 1-2 inches apart to add strength to the oven walls. Make sure the straw is fully covered by the mud.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 to create another layer of mud and straw. The walls should be at least 12 inches thick.

Let the mud dry for a few days until it is hard.
Once the mud is dry, remove any excess sand from the inside of the oven.
Build a fire inside the oven to dry out any remaining moisture and harden the clay. Start with a small fire and gradually increase the size over several hours until the entire oven is heated.

Once the oven is fully heated, remove the fire and let the oven cool down completely.

Place a metal grate or screen over the oven floor to hold the popcorn kernels.

Build a small fire on top of the metal grate and wait until it has burned down to hot coals.

Add a layer of popcorn kernels to the metal grate and cover the oven with a lid or piece of metal to trap the heat and smoke.
Wait until the popcorn has popped, which should take about 5-10 minutes depending on the heat of the fire and the amount of popcorn.
Remove the lid and enjoy your freshly popped popcorn with a smoky, delicious flavor.

Note: It's important to use only natural, untreated materials when building a mud oven. Do not use chemically treated wood or other materials that could release harmful chemicals when heated.
