Have you wanted to join the Caribbean Waterbird Census (CWC), but are unsure where to start? Do you need a refresher on the protocols or how to input data? Then join us for an informative webinar – learn how to carry out a CWC count, choose your site, time of day, protocols, how to enter your data in eBird Caribbean, and more! We will share tips and resources on bird ID, and give a brief overview of some of the results and conservation outcomes from the CWC, now in its 12th year!
The Caribbean is home to over 185 species of waterbirds (seabirds, wading birds, marshbirds, waterfowl and shorebirds), including a number of endemic and globally threatened species and many migrants. It is up to us to study, monitor and conserve these beautiful birds and the habitats they need to survive. The Caribbean Waterbird Census (CWC) Program—a partnership of Caribbean organizations, communities, and individuals that monitor waterbirds—was set up to do just that.
There's a 3-week regional count period in winter from Jan. 14th to Feb. 3rd, however, we encourage everyone to count waterbirds year-round, especially during migration periods in fall and spring. Help us fill our knowledge gaps of what waterbirds use our wetlands and when so that we can prioritize them for conservation!
