Weekendschool is een film over voorbeeldfuncties, sociale mobiliteit en het dubbeltje-kwartje verhaal. Over de vraag of je in Nederland alles kunt worden, ‘als je maar wilt’. En over hoe belangrijk het is voor een samenleving dat werelden elkaar ontmoeten.
Op IMC Weekendschool wordt les gegeven door vakmensen die vertellen voer hun beroep. Het mes snijdt daarbij aan twee kanten. De wereld van de vaak kansarme kinderen wordt groter. Tegelijk houden ze de volwassenen met hun scherpe vragen bij de les. Want hoe groot is het heelal nou precies? En wil een christelijke politieman een moslim wel helpen?
Reas: “Volwassenen die het maatschappelijk gemaakt hebben ontmoeten kinderen die op het eerste gezicht weinig kansen hebben. Zij zouden elkaar anders nooit zijn tegengekomen, In een snelkookpanformule leren ze elkaar kennen en gaan ze samen aan het werk. Dat levert geestige momenten op, maar het is soms ook heel confronterend. Het is een ontmoeting waarbij aan beide kanten wat gebeurt.”

Weekend School is a film about good examples and social mobility – if you ‘re born poor, does that mean you stay that way? It tackles the question as to whether you can become anything you want in the Netherlands, and how important it is for society that different worlds intersect one another.
At the IMC Weekend School, volunteer professionals teach kids about their careers. In so doing, the benefits are twofold, as the worlds of the often underprivileged kids are enriched and the adults are kept thinking with the kids’pointed questions. Just how big is the universe? And would a Christian police officer really do his best to help a Muslim?

Raes: “Adults who have succeeded in society meet kids who at first glance have very few chances in life. Without IMC Weekend School, they never would have met at all. In a pressure cooker formula, they get to know each other and get down to business together. That provides fors ome funny moments, but it can also be very confrontational. During these encounters, something happens to both the kids and the adults.”
