Criminals started working very fast and taking advantage of hospitals, the government, and other private organizations.

Melissa Virus
Back in 1999, the Melissa Virus made Microsoft Office a target by coming up with email attachments. Suppose the attachment was opened by someone. The virus would be forwarded to 50 users who accessed the system first. This virus was like a fast-spreading contagious attack that shut down multiple email servers and attacked client emailed. Unbelievingly, the IT industry had to spend $80 million in damages to completely remove the virus.

Mafia Boy
Another famous Ransomware hacker of all time, in 2000, Michael Calce, under the alias of Mafia Boy, let loose a DDos attack on all-time popular websites. These websites included Amazon, CNN, eBay, and Yahoo. The guy unassisted managed to completely shut down Yahoo for an hour even though Yahoo was the top search engine at that time. Surprisingly, due to his amazing skills, Michael Calce works for multiple companies today and helps them secure their system to prevent cyber-attacks.

University of York
In May 2020, the data of the University of York was compromised and breached when its software and cloud computing provider Blackbaud was hacked. The hacker got access to many sensitive files and demanded ransom which Blackbaud willingly paid. The hackers, in return, assured that they would delete all stolen files and data. Later on, the software company confirmed that the hackers had deleted everything as they ensured that customer data and privacy were prioritized.

Hospital Hack – California
A hospital in California faced an unfortunate event in the form of a cyber-attack in 2016. The cybercriminals wreaked havoc by shutting down the hospital system for a week. They demanded $3.7 million as ransom before they would leave all private files as it is. They had managed to take hold of almost everything, including patient files, bills, and patient reports. The attack created serious trouble for all the hospital staff, and they had to carry out their duties with much difficulty.
As cybersecurity threats and hacks are becoming more and more common, organizations should take control of the situation before it gets out of hand. It is vital that they invest in cybersecurity and ensure that information isn’t misused or falls into the wrong hands.
