Climbing the Sacred Mountain follows our multi-day ascent to the summit of Latmos (Beşparmak), starting from the shores of Lake Bafa and climbing to roughly 1300 meters. What begins as a long trek gradually becomes a demanding mountain climb as we navigate unmarked paths, dense rock formations, and a route that is rarely used today.
On this journey, we spend two nights camping on the mountain, explore the prehistoric cave paintings of Kerdemelik and Kavaklıdere, and learn about the long history of Latmos as a place of pilgrimage. In ancient Anatolia, this was the home of a weather god associated with rain rituals, and later, the landscape became linked with the story of Selene and Endymion — myths that give the mountain a quiet, enduring significance. Returning here year after year, reaching the summit has been a personal goal for a long time.
The final approach challenges us more than expected. When our original route closes off among the rocks, we circle around the mountain to attempt a different line. We lose the path, regain it, and eventually follow a narrow chimney that leads us toward the top. It’s a steady, honest test of endurance — a climb where patience matters as much as strength. But with some persistence, we find our way to the summit of this rarely visited peak.
