Talk about a step back in time from the "horse collar" front grille, lightly curved, fin-shaped molding on the doors and front fenders to the concave rear fins the styling of the Edsel is reminiscence of the 50's automotive era. Ford Motor Company's marketing research and development for a new intermediate line began in 1955 under the code name E car which stood for experimental car. Ford eventually decided on the name "Edsel", in honor of Edsel B. Ford, son of the company's founder, Henry Ford (despite objections from Henry Ford II). First offered in 1958 the Edsel lasted just 3 years. The Edsel was a marque of the Ford Motor Company during the 1958, 1959, and 1960 and is known best as one of the biggest commercial failures in the history of American business.
Baileyville, Illinois resident David Meile has resurrected what some consider a hideous looking car into one cool updated hot rod! Listen as David tells the interesting story behind the car. This Edsel features the original charcoal brown poly paint with an all original interior other than the seats which were reupholstered. Speaking of the interior check out the orbital compass style speedometer and electronic telle touch transmission buttons on the steering wheel!(available in only in 1958). These were just a few of the many one of a kind features on the Edsel line. Having a stock car background David installed stock car style coil springs, shocks, swaybars and a rear trunk mounted 22 gallon fuel tank. According to David the car can handle around turns just like his old stock cars. You also may notice the clear air cleaner lid on top of the AED 850 cfm carburetor and that too is a stock car item. The 428ci FE Ford Big Block pushes out around 450hp through a Tremec 5 speed manual transmission with overdrive that makes those highway cruises a breeze. Having raced in circles for many years this was David's first time ever down the dragstrip and he did pretty good running in the 13's and I'm sure surprising the Jeep Cherokee not to mention the 12 sec Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. David said he had a great time as he looks forward to coming back and trying some new things. Needless to say he's hooked on going straight now! #edselpacer #rare #vintage
