Antidepressants For Back Pain Why Really
Hi, it's Adam Heller, creator of Zero Pain Now and author of the book Adam Heller's Zero Pain Now.
Today an interesting article came across my desk and they were talking about the drug Cymbalta. Cymbalta is a very popular drug given out for chronic pain and ongoing pain often associated with fibromyalgia or back pain or neck pain. The article is really interesting to me and I hope it will be to you as well.
What it says is, "A new study shows people with chronic pain, low back pain, treated with Cymbalta experience significantly greater improvement in average pain scores than those treated with placebo."
Here's the interesting thing. I'm not surprised that people are getting benefit when they take Cymbalta. The reason is Cymbalta is an anti-depressant. So why is it you think that people are getting these benefits by taking an anti-depressant for lower back pain or fibromyalgia?
Keep in mind these are things that are normally diagnosed as some structural abnormality, a bulging disc or a herniated disc or stenosis or scoliosis or whiplash or neuropathy or tendonitis, again, fibromyalgia, torn rotator cuffs, all these things.
Yet, the drug that they're giving to mask the pain, because keep in mind that pain medications are always just cosmetic, they're there to mask the pain. When you stop taking the drug there's the pain. I wonder why it is that a drug, an anti-depressant, a drug fighting emotional issues is effective in pain.
It's not surprising at all to me because what we found after the last 14 years of studying neuroscience and neuropsychology and psychophysiology and neurolinguistics and all of these things with the mind/body dynamic is that most of the time, and I'm saying upwards of 90% of the time, chronic pain actually originates in the brain. Then there are these actual physical changes and the end result if pain, tingling, burning, numbness and weakness.
I'm not surprised that people are getting some temporary relief with an anti-depressant with a psychological drug. The problem is it never fixes anything. So, where the medical community, great people, are focusing on a symptoms rather than the cause.
The problem is once you start taking Cymbalta or these pain medications you have to keep fighting the symptom over and over and over again rather than eradicating the original cause that causes the problem.
It's almost always something that I refer to as diversion pain syndrome. It originates in the brain. They're actually physical changes and the end result is pain, tingling, burning, numbness, weakness, all the above.
My suggestion is instead of taking a medication, instead of taking a drug, instead of taking an anti-depressant how about learning what's really going on, what's really causing the pain and then doing something to eliminate the cause and eliminate the pain.
That's my suggestion for today. If you would like to investigate further, go to ZeroPainNow.com and click on the button that says "How This Works" and you'll get a very good breakdown of what really causes most chronic pain and a good way for you to end the pain once and for all.
I appreciate your watching this video. I hope it brought you great value and there'll be more coming up. In the meantime, here's to your pain-free life.
