Last summer, a Korean university student was tortured to death at a criminal compound in Cambodia.

The ringleader of the crime syndicate involved in the case has now been arrested in Thailand—and was found to be in possession of multiple videos showing victims being tortured.

Reporter Park Seo-bin has the story.

The suspect is a 42-year-old Chinese national surnamed Ham, identified as the ringleader of a Cambodia-based fraud syndicate.

Ham is accused of luring South Koreans to Cambodia between May and July last year by advertising high-paying part-time jobs.

Among those deceived by Ham was a university student surnamed Park, who was found dead in Kampong Bay, Cambodia, in August last year.

After entering Cambodia, Park was detained at a criminal compound in the Bokor Mountain area, where he was tortured—including being forcibly administered drugs—before dying.

On Ham’s computer, investigators found numerous call records saved under the name “slave,” as well as multiple videos believed to have been used for intimidation and coercion.

Previously, in November last year, the Ministry of Justice and investigative authorities arrested suspects including Li Guanghao in Cambodia on charges related to Park’s killing. After receiving intelligence that Ham had fled to Thailand, authorities tracked him down.

Through international cooperation with Thai investigators—including CCTV analysis and communications tracking—Ham was arrested about a month later as another key suspect.

The Ministry of Justice said it will swiftly request extradition to bring Ham back to South Korea.

Police stated they will continue to pursue all individuals involved in Park’s killing to the end, regardless of nationality.
