Petit Jean State Park in Central Arkansas sits atop a miles long but narrow sandstone hill. This geologic formation stands over 1100 feet above the valley carved by the Arkansas River and can be seen from miles away.

Arkansas is richly steeped in documented history as far back as the early French explorers. It is from those French traders that Petit Jean is named. The story is one for the movies and tragic in its tale.

The park offers several trails that wind along the top of the long mountain providing outstanding views, but there are also trails that fall steeply into the canyons and hollows on the sides of this great monolith of stone.

We camped at a nearby farm market and took in a few of the overlooks before making our way to the trailhead. A crisp 42 degree late morning start began under blue skies and sun. This is our kind of day to hike.

The Seven Hollows trail is a moderately rugged 4.5 mile loop travelling up, down, and around seven hollows along the south side of Petit Jean. An additional half mile, or so, can be added with the out and back Grotto trail at the bottom of the loop. The side excursion is highly recommended.

The hike did not disappoint. We strolled easily along a well trodden path that only at times would become muddy or rocky. The climbs and descents were not overly taxing but some did require that you pay attention.

The eroded sandstone outcroppings were fascinating in their variety. Each hollow seemed to have its own feel, its own personality.

We marvelled at the beauty of the trail and the day as we listened to large icecicles crashing to the ground only feet from where we last tread.

The handful of stream crossings posed no threat of wet feet.

The sun moved from east to west as we rounded the turn and made our way back north to the trailhead.
