Kajama Ship - Historical Facts

Origin: The Kajama is a traditionally rigged three-masted schooner. It was originally built in Hamburg, Germany, in 1930.

Name: Originally named the "Wilfried" at the time of its construction, the ship was later renamed "Kajama" to honor the three sons of Captain Jan Jensen, her first owner. The name "Kajama" is an amalgamation of the first letters of each son's name: KA for Karl, JA for Jan, and MA for Max.

Purpose: The Kajama was initially used for trading and transport purposes, primarily hauling cargoes like salt, coal, and grain between various European ports.

Notable Incident: In 1935, Kajama encountered a hurricane off the coast of Spain. The ship and its crew braved the storm and made it through unscathed, a testament to its sturdy construction and the capabilities of its crew.

World War II: During the Second World War, the Kajama was almost captured by a British warship. The British mistakenly believed the Kajama was a German spy ship, but they eventually released her after no evidence was found to support the claim.

Later Years: The ship continued to operate as a trading vessel in Europe until 1998. It was then that the ship was brought to Toronto, Canada.

Current Role: Since its arrival in Toronto, the Kajama has been refurbished and currently serves as a cruise ship, offering sailing experiences on Lake Ontario. It's a popular attraction in Toronto's waterfront area, offering a blend of history and scenic views to its passengers.

Historical Significance: Today, the Kajama stands as a testament to the golden age of sail, offering visitors a glimpse into maritime history and the long-standing tradition of tall ships.
