Have you ever seen this plant before?

The Hairy Balls plant (Gymnocarpus physocarpus) is one of the strangest looking plants you will find. Although it looks quite different from traditional milkweed, it is in the milkweed family and attracts plenty of monarch butterflies. It is native to South Africa and does well in zones 8-10. The puffy sacks are filled with delicate seeds and when the pod turns tan and ripe, they literally explode out of the pod 😳⁣

When I stumbled upon this spectacular specimen, it reminded me of those round paper lanterns you see hanging from trees, and I learned that it is a favorite choice for florists as well. I didn’t end up buying this one because it is way too big for my space at the moment, but it is high on the list for the next garden 👍⁣
