There are days when everything is going great. Your phone is ringing, your drivers are towing, and you’re thinking, “I need to buy more trucks.”

But then the tide turns. And you lose your best guys.

Yes, the single most frustrating thing about growing a towing business is the difficulty in attracting and retaining quality drivers.

But it can be done.

And with the right people on the bus you can grow your business to new heights.

So, how do you do it?

The first thing you’ve got to do is factor their wages into your rates.

Of course, having a great work environment and treating your people is also very important.

But if what you’re paying can’t compete with other employers, all the pizza parties and pats on the back aren’t going to amount to a hill of beans.

All this to say that you can’t continue contracting with motor clubs and other low-paying entities if they’re not willing to partner with you in maintaining quality drivers.

Which means, you’ve got to do a lot of hard thinking and have some difficult discussions if you’re going to make this thing work.

Most of the towing company owners I talk to look at IAA, Copart, and motor clubs as just fillers.

They’re not making any money with them.
So, if you break it down. What they’re doing is, instead of profiting from these relationships, they’re taking cash call money and spending it on servicing the fillers.

Rather than subsidizing these low-paying entities and losing good people in the process, focus on marketing your business to cash-paying customers.

When you do, you’ll not only have the ability to retain quality drivers, but at the end of the day, you’ll make more money and have a business you can be proud of.
