新加坡歌台最早可以追溯到二十世纪二三十年代，当时举办歌台是为了庆祝传统节日中元节。根据佛教传说，孤魂野鬼会在农历七月十五日回返人间。这一天人们要祭拜鬼神。歌台在当时就是祭拜仪式时安抚鬼神的节目。

因此，每年农历七月举办歌台的传统至少已有90多年的历史。

在早期，歌台表演主要以传统戏曲为主，如粤剧、潮剧、琼剧等。随着时间的推移，歌台表演逐渐加入了流行歌曲、杂耍、相声等元素，成为一种综合性的娱乐活动。

如今，每年农历七月，新加坡各地都会举办各种规模的歌台表演，吸引了众多观众前来观看。歌台表演已成为新加坡独特的民间传统文化，是新加坡人喜爱的传统娱乐活动之一。
