Dr. Nemeth was recently in New York City attending the advanced training session for the Biolase Waterlase dental laser. He had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Sam Low (Biolase CDO) about the laser and some of its capabilities.

The Waterlase is an Erbium Laser that has multiple functions that other dental lasers do not. It can work on both soft tissue and hard tissue. It also has superior capabilities for treating peri implant disease.

The Biolase laser uses water and air to create a photo acoustic environment that destroys the infected tissue using bubbles. Dr. Low explains that gum disease is not just about soft tissue, its about the roots of the teeth and the bone. To treat gum disease with a laser, you typically need to use different types of lasers for different types of tissue. With Biolase, you can do it all with one dental laser!

When you have an implant failure or peri-implantitis, the Waterlase can disinfect an implant and clean them more effectively because of the properties of the water and the laser as well as the angle of the laser tip/
