The Heisterbach Abbey is located in the Siebengebirge—a hill range formed by volcanic activity. These hill were formed when magma could not reach the surface, so it solidified underground. In 1202, the Romanesque abbey was completed, and in 1327 the complete monastery complex was finished. Measuring 88 metres long and 44 metres wide, only a small part still stands today. In 1809, demolition started to reuse the building materials. In 1820, a Count bought the site, transforming it into an English garden and built a mausoleum.
