WALKS IN DORSET at CHALDON HERRING or EAST CHALDON

In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6.5 mile circular walk from the village of Chaldon Herring (also known as East Chaldon) which is located about 8 miles South East of Dorchester. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.

After stopping off at a layby on the top of a ridge overlooking Chaldon Herring – to visit the “Five Marys” bronze age barrows – I parked my car at The Sailor's Return pub (which was to be my final destination).

I started my walk with a wander through the village, crossing a ford, & passing the village green , to explore the delightful church of St Nicholas.

My route took me out of the village along a bridleway heading South East, uphill towards the coast.

At a place called Daggers Gate, I turned Westwards to follow “Old Daggers Gate Road) which runs parallel to the South West Coast path. There were stunning views to be enjoyed both to the North & indeed towards the sea to the South.

Passing by a beacon, a memorial to the author Llewelyn Powys & some sculptures, I gradually headed North West & finally joined a bridleway (to the North) that took me to the tiny hamlet of West Chaldon.

The final leg of my walk took me along a quiet country lane back to Chaldon Herring where I took refreshment at the pub.
