Airbus A3 80 – the King of the Skies is one of the legendary aircraft in global aviation history. Once impressed nearly all major airlines around the world, its customers ranged from Emirates and Singapore Airlines to Lufthansa, and even Qatar Airways, which brought it back into service twice after having declared it would never operate the aircraft again. However, not every airline was won over by this giant. A prime example is Air France, the national carrier from Airbus’s very own homeland, which became one of the first airlines to abandon this aircraft.

From the moment it appeared, the Airbus A3 80 made it clear that it was never just an ordinary airplane. It was a symbol. A colossal double-decker beast, a testament to human arrogance, born from a bold ambition to redefine global air travel. Almost every major airline coveted it, seeing it as the most significant weapon in its fleet. Emirates, with its boundless vision, made it the backbone and very identity of an empire. Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways… all were pleased with the giant, using it as a powerful tool to dominate the world’s busiest hubs.

And of course, there was Air France. At first glance, the airline’s decision to order the A3 80 seemed perfectly logical: Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) was nearing capacity, demand for long-haul flights to the U.S. and Asia was surging, and deploying larger aircraft was expected to cut costs. Yet there was one laughable secret if you paid close attention: politics. With Airbus’s production line based in France, if Air France didn’t buy it, then who would? The airline had no choice. It was forced to become an early customer, to pretend this was a “fantastic deal” on the stage of the 2001 Paris Air Show.
Thus, the first A3 80 joined the carrier’s fleet in 2009 with a 538-seat configuration, expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Those numbers sounded irresistible, especially in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The airline even boasted about its “efficiency” on key routes.
