Elm Avenue is finally ready for its close-up.

East Waco's historic main thoroughfare is completely open to traffic for the first time since early 2019 as the city of Waco starts to wrap up some $21 million in infrastructure investments in the area, including $12 million for Elm itself.

Thanks to new accessible sidewalks and pedestrian crossing improvements, some say they have already seen an increase in foot traffic, and other improvements have made Elm an inviting place to visit.

But constant construction troubles — three years of it — have taken their toll on local businesses. Those that survived are grateful, but many still feel the sting of being closed off for so long as they look toward the corridor’s growth.
