This is a video essay I made with my friend Colin Parson's help about the work I did this summer. I flew to Basra Iraq with some safecast.org donated geiger counters to explore the potential application for detecting locations contaminated with depleted uranium. I came upon invitation from an NGO I met at the PeaceTech camps earlier in 2014. They were working on issues around childhood cancer in Basra. I was scared to go at first, but I'm really happy to have found out what I did. Community hackerspaces forming and a beautiful hospitality opened up the city to me. There's a lot more work to be done in terms of creating an open data repository, different tools needed (like a mass spectrometer), and more security protocols.
