Mike Kenji Shinoda was born in Los Angeles in 1977 and formed a band first called Xero with high school classmates Brad Delson and Rob Bourdon. In college, he experienced an identity crisis as a half-Japanese American who had never been to Japan. Xero was unable to land a record deal, but after their original vocalist left and was replaced with Chester Bennington, the group (now renamed Linkin Park) signed with Warner Brothers and broke out with their debut Hybrid Theory. But perhaps the biggest reason for Linkin Park's early success was Mike Shinoda's remixing and graphic design prowess. Reanimation introduced new versions of the band's songs with graffiti-based artwork, and his collaboration with Jay-Z in 2006 won him the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. In 2004, Shinoda formed a side project called Fort Minor to further explore hip hop. The project only released one full album but got help from Lupe Fiasco, Common, John Legend, and The Roots. "Remember the Name" features underground hip-hop band Styles of Beyond and was later used as the theme for the 2006/07 NBA Playoffs and the '08 draft, as well as the show Friday Night Lights and the movies Peter Rabbit and The Smurfs 2. Linkin Park would continue until Chester Bennington's death in 2017, after which Mike released the Post Traumatic EP with three songs about his feelings over Chester's demise.
