Network Rail who is responsible for this, claim that it is now safer than before. 97% safer their Media Centre says. If that was true then they've been knowingly operating a dangerous crossing for years which is a criminal offence. Fortunately it is only NR's faulty risk assessment system that produces such a ridiculous figure. This channel has been telling them for years that it doesn't work. One of the problems with NR is that they seem so arrogant. They know best and local Councils, local press reporters, local businesses and local people aren't allowed to question their extravagant spending and foolish schemes. But let's be fair to Network Rail, they can easily publish the safety record of this crossing. There have been about a million train journeys over it in the last 40 years. How many fatal accidents? None? OK, how many minor injuries? Their press release made no mention of the extra delays motorists were going to endure. No apologies for that or for spoiling the Surrey countryside. Imagine if anyone else made a mess like that. NR even claim that the vast amount extra equipment they've installed will be cheaper to maintain than the very simple system they had before. As their "intelligent modern equipment" isn't even able to operate the crossing very well, might walkers be well advised to look each way before using the crossing in future?
