Dudley Savage at the organ of the ABC Theatre, Plymouth

based on the Radio 1 and 2 series 'As Prescribed' broadcast every Sunday

Dudley Savage and the Plymouth Sound
For over twenty-two years Dudley Savage has been playing requests for sick people in hospital and at home on the organ of the ABC Theatre, Plymouth, in his weekly "As Prescribed" programme for listeners in the former South and West Region of the BBC. In September 1968 it was decided to discontinue the series, but such was the outcry that the pro-gramme was restored to the schedules three months later.

In the summer of 1969 the BBC's plans for the reorganisation of radio — "Broad-casting in the Seventies" — were announced. under which regional broad-casting would come to an end and be replaced by area and local broadcasting. Once more fans of "As Prescribed" saw their favourite programme threatened —but their fears were unfounded. When the new schedules came into effect in April 1970, "As Prescribed" was moved to Radio 1 and Radio 2 and is now heard all over the country on Sunday mornings. Ever since the programme began, Dudley Savage has received letters from outside the old region's boundaries — even from France and Scandinavia — from enthusiasts who have often gone to tremendous lengths to pick up transmissions outside the accepted reception area. Now his mail comes from all over the country and his new listeners are proving, as his regional ones have done for so many years, that even in these days of groups and grooviness there is a strong and enthusiastic following for the cinema organ.

Dudley Savage is a Cornishman. He showed great promise in music at a very early age and studied the organ under the assistant organist of Truro Cathedral. After winning the Organ Solo event at the Cornish Music Festival playing Bach, at the age of sixteen, he was offered a contract to tour the country as 'The Cornish Boy Organist'. Two years later he was appointed organist at the newly opened Royal (ABC) Theatre in Plymouth. After six years Army service, he chose to free-lance and has since played all over Great Britain and has broadcast on more than five thousand occasions in this country, India and South Africa. He is especially well known for the popular series As Prescribed' a request programme for patients in hospitals and at home, which first started on the West Home Service in 1948. When in 1968, the B.B.C. announced the series was at an end, they received a petition signed by over 43,000 people, and as a result the programme was brought back to the national B.B.C. Radio 2. Dudley is a regular broadcaster in the South West of England, both on Television and Radio, and in 1978 was awarded the M.B.E. for his services. Married—with two sons—Dudley and his wife Doreen live in a delightful cottage in Cornwall. The lovely 5 Rank Wurlitzer in Oxnead Mill started life over 50 years ago in North Tonawanda U.S.A. It was first installed in the Sutton Theatre in Thomas, West Virginia, as a four rank organ Opus No. 1840. After about eighteen months, with an added Tibia rank it crossed the Atlantic to England where it was then installed in the Regal Theatre, Colchester. The Regal was officially opened in February 1931 and was played by one of the leading organists of the day, Max Bruce. He stayed until June of that year and was then succeeded by the Orchestra's pianist Tom Walker, who played the organ right up to its removal in 1963. The organ was then purchased by Mr. Jim Crampton who installed it in a beautifully converted concert room on the second floor of Oxnead Water Mill. The white painted console was restored to its original mahogany woodwork and now looks as it did when first leaving the factory. The organ is now used for concerts and social functions and it is hoped that this L.P. will give some recollections of the glorious tones of an entertainment veteran of a bygone era.
