The Hopper Flip 12 is a slightly larger, personal-sized cooler carried over the shoulder. It's extremely tough, has handled almost everywhere, and has a leakproof zipper. It's one of the coolers that scored the highest in our tests and is our Top Pick for a Personal Cooler. The Hopper Flip 12 packs decent insulation into a relatively small cooler. During our rigorous 100°+ F testing, the small-but-mighty Flip kept USDA food-safe temperatures of 40°F or lower for 37 hours, ranking just below average among a group of many much larger models. This serious-business box maintained ideal beer temperatures of 50°F or less for 44 hours. The Flip achieves this by using Yeti's closed-cell foam and leakproof zipper to keep your contents cold. If you want a cooler that can sit next to you on a hot, sunny beach, or you can leave baking in the sun in your truck all day and still have cold contents, this cooler is up to the task. We have no complaints about this personal-sized cooler's insulation performance.

The closed-cell EVA foam insulation on the Mountainsmith Cooloir 12 soft-sided cooler represents a significant improvement in insulation - it's a superior product. This 12L size is compact but extremely useful. There's also the 24L size if you need more space. The cooler withstood months of use admirably. I highly recommend it for value and quality in a small soft-sided cooler ideal for small boats, canoes, kayaks, ATVs, day trips, and other activities. The 400d nylon exterior and TPU/PU coating are not to be taken lightly; they are thick and resistant to abuse, making it extremely durable. It's small but portable and extremely useful.

The Jaunt is a roll-top backpack, so you can fill it with whatever you want—nine cans, three bottles of chilled wine, or an assortment of lunch meats and deli cheeses for snacking—then roll the top down, fold in the ends, and clip them together. A valve allows extra air to be released as you move. However, if you keep the air in, the dang thing will float; it's also waterproof. The Jaunt then provides 24 hours of solid ice retention and even longer chill time thanks to its insulating layer and thick exterior (it feels like an inner tube commissioned by Navy SEALS). Being the backpack it is, the Jaunt is more accessible to carry than a boxy cooler with a weird handle prone to bumping the first layer of skin off your shins. That'll make itself abundantly clear if your summer plans include camping, hiking, picnicking, outdoor-concert-going, recreational-sports-playing, etc. It also has delightfully padded, adjustable straps.

The Hydro Flask Unbound 22L is a stylish backpack cooler with some valuable features but poor insulation. It has extra pockets and a modern design that we like, but it easily tips over, is stiff to carry, and the back padding is a sweat-collection trap. Although durable, the insulation and carrying experience falls short of the competition. The Hydro Flask Unbound 22L backpack cooler is made of 420D nylon and has welded seams. It has a thick back cushion and a stiff, upright design. Unfortunately, the insulation performance of this cooler was still unimpressive. The Unbound only kept FDA-recommended food-safe temperatures for 1.5 days, which was even questionable.
