A two-year test drive involving Honda and the Ohio Department of Transportation has found "highly accurate" results while evaluating an automated system to proactively spot road problems, including potholes, faded lane markings, damaged guardrails and more.

The carmaker's prototype proactive roadway maintenance system uses additional cameras and sensors installed on a Honda vehicle to detect and report road issues in real time.

Honda Chief Engineer in Sustainability and New Business Development Sue Bai said the concept started more than 10 years ago.

"We started talking about how (we can) help make the road inspection process more efficient," Bai said. "We all eventually learned a lot."

DriveOhio, ODOT's smart mobility division, funded the $700,000 project, which involved ODOT team members driving Honda vehicles equipped with advanced vision and Lidar sensors across roughly 3,000 miles in Franklin, Union, and Athens counties, DriveOhio spokesperson Breanna Badanes said.
