WRC RallyRACC Catalunya: Mikkelsen inherits victory. Andreas Mikkelsen takes shock win in Spain after Sebastien Ogier crashes in final stage

Volkswagen's Andreas Mikkelsen has won RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada, the penultimate round in the 2015 World Rally Championship, after team-mate and three-time WRC Champion Sebastien Ogier dramatically crashed in the final stage.

Ogier did have a commanding 50.9s lead going into the Power Stage, but just 4 kilometres or so from the end, he made a mistake in a left-hander corner and slid wide into the barriers, taking a wheel off his Polo R WRC.

Ogier's late misfortune handed the victory to Mikkelsen, the Norwegian having pushed through the final test to hold off Jari-Matti Latvala.

“I don't really know what to say,” Mikkelsen told the official WRC site. “Of course not the way I wanted to win my first rally. It's unreal! We struggled on the gravel [on Friday] but we pushed like hell on the tarmac. We gave everything we could.

“I'm sure I'll cry on the road section!”

Mikkelsen had finished the first-full day competition on Friday in sixth, 37.4s off Ogier. However, he then climbed back to third on Saturday morning, with Latvala slipping to fourth after losing 50s with a puncture in SS12.

Latvala stormed back though in the afternoon, hauling himself back to P2 and finishing the leg 2.9s in front of Mikkelsen.

On the final day, Mikkelsen and Latvala had a great battle, but four stage wins from six – combined with another puncture for Latvala in SS21 – meant Mikkelsen finished ahead.

Meanwhile, local star Dani Sordo was third in his Hyundai i20 WRC. Sordo briefly held second after Saturday's opening loop, but was unable to hold off the VWs of Latvala and Mikkelsen in the afternoon. He finished 18.1 seconds shy of P2.

Citroen duo Mads Ostberg and Kris Meeke took fourth and fifth in their DS 3 WRCs, the former getting back in front of his team-mate on Sunday after the Ulsterman spun in SS19 and lost about 10 seconds. The difference at the end was just 1.9s.

Hyundai third driver Hayden Paddon was next up in sixth, with Ford privateer Martin Prokop finishing seventh and Thierry Neuville eighth, the latter losing almost 5 minutes in the penultimate stage after the transmission on his i20 WRC broke under braking and he went off.

Pontus Tidemand claimed ninth and the WRC2 class win, building a 1 minute lead on Friday and Saturday morning, before then easing off and eventually finishing 10.7s up on fellow Skoda Fabia R5 runner, Jan Kopecky.

Nasser Al-Attiyah completed the support category podium, just 0.1s ahead of Armin Kremer, to successfully retain his WRC2 title. It was the Qatari's third title success of the year, as he also won the FIA Middle East Rally Championship last weekend for the 11th time and earlier this month secured the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies crown.

Of the rest, former F1 driver Robert Kubica had a typically mixed event in his Fiesta RS WRC, winning SS3 and SS6, but slowed by several punctures as well as brake and gearbox issues.

M-Sport duo Ott Tanak and Elfyn Evans both finished well down under Rally 2 after retiring on Saturday. Tanak had been on course for third until he lost a wheel in SS11, while Evans was running ninth when he went off the road in SS13.

Citroen youngster Stephane Lefebvre also got to the end under Rally 2 after brake system issues forced him out on Saturday on the road section to SS10, the first stage of the day.

The 2015 World Rally Championship now concludes next month with Wales Rally GB, running from November 12-15.
