Neophyte Sen. Rodante Marcoleta - fresh from his recent word war with Sen. Panfilo Lacson - has failed to gain allies in the Senate majority because of his abrasive behavior and refusal to follow Senate processes, a UP professor said Wednesday.

Prof. Maria Ela Atienza, former chair of the UP Department of Political Science, said Tuesday’s clash between Marcoleta and Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chairman Panfilo Lacson should have been done at the committee and not the plenary.

“Baguhan si Senator Marcoleta. Dapat irespeto din niya at alamin ang proseso sa loob ng Senado,” she told DZMM.

Atienza said Marcoleta is performing his function as a member of the minority to question the Senate majority’s decision as a form of check and balance.

However, she said Marcoleta's position that the Philippine should give up the Kalayaan Island Group - made during a Commission on Appointments hearing - showed that the neophyte does not follow the Senate’s own processes.

“Sinisira niya ‘yung proseso na sinusunod ng Senado,” she said.

“Bilang minority dapat makumbsini niya ibang miyembro ng majority kaya lang kung ganyan, abrasive ang ugali, talagang ayaw makinig, ay sino ang kakampi sa kanya.”

She added that the Senate leadership should step in to defuse the word war as it might lead to an ethics complaint vs Marcoleta.
