The summer tanager (Piranga rubra) is a striking bird known for its bold coloration—males are entirely bright red, while females are a rich yellow-olive. Found mainly in the southeastern and central U.S. during summer months, this tanager breeds in open woodlands, particularly those with oak and pine, and is a frequent visitor to forest edges, gardens, and even homesteads with good tree cover.

🔍 Range:
Summer tanagers breed across the southern United States, from California and Texas to the Carolinas, and migrate to Central and South America for the winter.

🍴 Diet:
They are insect specialists, especially fond of bees and wasps, which they skillfully catch mid-air and subdue by beating them on a branch to remove the stinger. They also consume berries and fruit—making a homestead with native plants a welcome stop.

🐣 Breeding:
Nests are usually built on horizontal tree branches, often high off the ground. The female builds the nest and incubates 3–4 pale blue or greenish eggs. Both parents feed the young.

🧭 Migration:
These birds are long-distance migrants, leaving the U.S. in early fall and traveling to northern South America. They return in late spring, bringing vibrant color and insect control to areas they visit.
