Probably the best years in Belgian football history - Club Brugge was UEFA Cup and European Cup finalist, Anderlecht played in 3 CWC finals in a row (2 won), Molenbeek was UEFA Cup semi-finalist 77...
The Belgian team was in the middle of a period of transition under the reign of Guy Thys, who succeeded Raymond Goethals. Van Himst and Van Moer, have dissapeared from the international scene and were replaced by young players like Renquin, Pfaff, Ceulemans, Wellens, Geurts, Cluytens, Meeuws and other fine players of that period. Piot and Lambert were almost ending their careers but without doubt they would have been selected if the team qualified for the finals.
Guy Thys would soon have to opt for a basic teams, because there are defeats that have to be forgotten. Somewhere in the half of the qualifying phase, he chose to replace Piot with Pfaff as the starting goalkeeper, with a defence consisting of Renquing, Meeuws, Broos and Gerets. The middle was ran by Cools, together with Coeck and Vandereycken, while Van der Elst ran on the right wing. Up front was Lambert, aided by the emerging Ceulemans who just had a terrific season with Lierse. Guy Thys also counted on Vercauteren, Courant, Rene Verheyen, Van Gool and Wellens as back-ups.
They were grouped again with Netherlands, their old foes from previous qualifying campaigns, along with Northern Ireland (ran by returning George Best) and outsiders Iceland. Belgium started well by defeating Iceland and Northern Ireland in 76'. It was a fine preparation for an important match against the Dutch in March of 77. However, the total football again prevailed and the Belgian squad was narrowly defeated 2:0. Their hope was to try and win in the return game in Amsterdam.
In the September window, they easily won against Iceland 4:0, and went with high hopes to the deciding match against the Dutch in October 77. The Dutch had 9 points before the game, while Belgium was at 6 points, however it was Holland's last game in the qualifying phase while Belgium had a last game away at Northern Ireland. If Belgium was to win, they would search their WC ticket in the last game against the N.Irish at Belfast. However, Belgium was eliminated by Netherlands 1:0 for the participation in the final phase of the WC in Argentina.
The strong Belgium was hindered for the third time in a row by the Dutch. In the last game, the already eliminated Belgium also lost 3-0 to the Northern Ireland of George Best, thus ending another disappointing qualifying campaign. But bright times for Belgium were yet to come under Thys and by rejuvenating the squad it's exactly what Belgium needed.
