International Vulture Awareness Day

Be a voice for vultures!

The first Saturday in September each year is International Vulture Awareness Day. This day is intended to raise awareness around the most imperiled group of birds in the word, all while celebrating their importance within our ecosystems.

Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction.

As nature’s clean-up crew, vultures play a vital role in the environments in which they live. Their scavenging behavior helps keep ecosystems healthy and likely reduces the spread of disease.

Did you know that there are 23 species of vultures in the world? Three of them are found in North America; the Black Vulture, California Condor and the Turkey Vulture.

Fun Facts:

Vultures urinate on their legs and feet to cool off on hot days, a process called urohydrosis. Their urine also helps kill any bacteria or parasites they’ve picked up from walking through carcasses or perching on dead animals.

As they bury their heads in a carcass, the bare skin (without feathers) stays cleaner. Parasites and other nasty bugs don’t cling to them which keeps them healthy.

They have huge feet with really long toes. They use them to walk and to hold down the carcass when they are eating. Their feet also help them regulate their body temperature and stay cool.

Vultures have relatively weak legs and feet with blunt talons, though they do have powerful bills. If a carcass is too stiff for them to rip open, they will wait for another predator to open the flesh before they feed. This is why vultures are often seen with other carrion-eating animals such as hyenas, coyotes, and eagles.

A vulture’s stomach acid is significantly stronger and more corrosive than that of other animals or birds. This allows these scavengers to feed on rotting carcasses that may be infected with dangerous bacteria, because the acid will kill that bacteria so it does not threaten the vulture.

New World vultures lack a syrinx (voicebox) and are nearly silent. They do not have songs, and their typical vocalizations are limited to grunts, hisses, bill clacks, and similar sounds that don't require complex vocal cords.

Even though they are always associated with carrion, they are very clean birds and bathe on a regular basis, just as other birds do.
