Marcus Tullius Cicero delivered this speech on behalf of Marcus Marcellus after the events of the second phase of the Roman Civil War had concluded. Gnaeus Pompey is now dead and Gaius Julius Caesar has returned triumphant to Rome. The speech is an instance of deference bordering on flattery in honor of the dictator Caesar, and shows all the remarkable fireworks of Cicero's brilliant oratory.
