Описание к видео What does Patent Foramen Ovale in newborn signify? - Dr. Shaheena Athif

Foramen ovale is normal phenomenon which is seen in the newborn or in the fetal period, as the fetal lung is not working, then the oxygenation is not taking place in the lung of the fetus and the mother or the umbilical cord of the fetus has to take care of the oxygenation. The oxygenated blood from the right atrium goes to the left atrium to the left ventricle and is pumped into the fetus. Now the left atrium and the right atrium has a connection called as the foramen ovale, which is seen in the fetal period, but as soon as the birth happens, the child starts breathing, and hence due to the pressure of the fetal lungs and the right atrial pressure increases, this leads to the closure of the foramen ovale. In almost 20 -30% of the cases, this foramen ovale, may not be closed or it may be patent. If it is there is no signs and symptoms, it is an incidental finding during any echo done or any other investigation done. So it is usually not treated and not much of a worry if it is present. If it is present at a later age group, then it may be the cause of any ischemic attacks or any strokes. It is seen at the retrospective stage and hence need not be treated.
