Intergenerational Wisdom:
The Role of Mentoring in Queer Leadership Development.
In this panel discussion, we explored how through mentoring, LGBTQ+ elders can facilitate Queer Leadership and transmit the community’s histories and resources to younger talent in ways that enable surviving and thriving within and outside of the workplace.
Overview of Session:
Intergenerational Wisdom is described as the sharing and transmission of knowledge, beliefs, and experiences from one generation to the next. LGBTQ+ communities have always benefited from a rich oral storytelling tradition which has been instrumental for surviving historical and systematic erasure of LGBTQ+ stories within public forums. In the workplace, however, even though there is no clear cut path to ‘making it’, there are countless intersectional (self) leadership lessons and resources that can be shared by LGBTQ+ elders - from how to create safety and build community, to sharing guidance on wellbeing and meeting their psychosocial needs, self-advocacy, influencing and having an impact, sometimes without roadmaps or inclusive policies in place.

Speakers:
Yujx Smith (he/him)
Yujx is a gay transgender man living in London. He is an art graduate who pivoted into the legal sector. He has previously founded and lead a queer World Cinema society celebrating the work of marginalised filmmakers outside the European narrative. He currently works for large international company and helps lead his workplace's Pride Employee Resource Group UK Chapter. He takes avid interest in sociological and political theory, with focus on anti-fascism, queer liberation, and surviving trauma. He credits Leslie Feinberg's lecture 'Beyond Pink and Blue' as a key influence on his life and work. Yujx continues to create art through painting, poetry, and prose exploring intersectional masculinity and the 'gay lament'.
Erica Rose (she/her)
Erica is passionate about driving the EDIB agenda to add value to organisations and business outcomes by creating productive working environments and cultures where every individual can feel safe, a sense of belonging and is empowered to achieve their full potential. She was a senior leader at The Body Shop, she has 30 years’ experience of working in the global Quality and Health & Safety sector. She utilised her passion for EDIB to launch and co-Chair TBS Together, The Body Shop’s LGBTQ+ Network, which spring boarded the creation of TBS’s Mental Health Network, Gender Equity Network, Ethnicity Network and Disability Network, as well as similar networks in TBS sister companies. And she continues to be an advocate for the support of Gender equality, Mental Health and Menopause in the workplace.
Marc Thompson (he/him)
Marc Thompson is a renowned creative activist, health promotion specialist, and podcaster with a wealth of experience in HIV activism and education. His own diagnosis in 1986 spurred him to create and develop various movements, groups, and interventions for Black, queer, and HIV communities over the past 30 years. With an unwavering commitment to the cause, Marc currently serves as the co-director of The Love Tank, a not-for-profit organization that strives to promote the health and wellbeing of underserved communities through campaigning, education, advocacy, and research.
Jae Sloan (they/them)
Jae is an organisational development consultant, executive coach, writer and speaker with expertise in business strategy, performance, inclusion & diversity, leadership and change. They have 20 years’ experience working in a multinational pharma organisation as well as more than 5 years of professional experience working in education/non-profit community organisations. As an out queer (non-binary, gay) person, Jae has nearly 10 years of leadership in inclusion and diversity with an emphasis on LGBTQ+. Jae is the Co-Founder and current Co-Chair of the Proud Science Alliance, a collective of healthcare and life sciences sector LGBTQ+ networks and partners.
