On June 19, 1946, Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe, British Deputy Chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trial, concluded his cross examination of Franz von Papen. He admitted that he had given aid to the Austrian Nazis during his time as Ambassador there. Papen was confronted with a statement that Hitler had "the clever hand which eliminated political Catholicism without touching the Christian foundations of Germany."
