Описание к видео Telephone landlines demise (don't get me started) (UK) - BBC News - 22nd April 2021

The trend downwards and the possible demise eventually of the landline telephone in the UK. The history of, the facts, figures and why the trend happening and why people are being forced to use landlines, they neither use or want at this time.

Five million households say they no longer need a home phone (landline) telephone. Nearly three in ten people say the last person to phone was a nuisance caller, with the proportion of scam calls rocketing six-fold since 2017.

*The rant (from the things I know about this situation):
Okay, so I know perhaps too much about this, but since BT (British Telecom) shares went on the market back in the 1980s and opened up the market for other companies - they were allowed to keep hold of ALL the lines (they could rent out to others). Fast forward, BT and *Openreach being linked still had this stranglehold of the lines into the 21st Century and into the internet and mobile phone era. **OFCOM kept looking at the issue and kept telling BT to do better, but all the reports I have seen over the many years, BT said all sorts of nonsense and crap to keep hold of the lines they could rent out to customers, even though more and more people only want broadband - not the phone line - as it is not needed or wanted.

Okay, so there are still a lot of older people who rely on the landline phone, but the numbers with mobile phones and no landline is also increasing. BT had the option years ago to roll out broadband to each household so no need to use a phone line but stopped short - deliberately, so they could supply the road to house via the copper wire - hence you still need to have a landline and of course - who owns all the lines - BT. With less people using lines - they rental prices increase, BT and others says it needs to be - greedy if you ask me.

In the last year or two - **OFCOM finally got fed up and split BT and *Openreach but only partially, I saw a short while later the spokesperson for OFCOM has left for another top job and I already saw how they were giving so many weak chances to BT to clean up their act and they just didn't. I'm just wondering now, if they were pushed from that job for being so weak and ineffective?

This means the British customer if they want broadband for the home currently will have to have a landline as there are very few alternatives to have one without one. And the prices are just going up, as well as BT buying out several rivals but they are part of BT PLC group. So people are unfairly forced to have a landline who don't want one, whilst others with a mobile and mobile broadband never have to and that is increasing.

A fact/story I heard in the last couple of years, is how many young people only know of a landline, because their parents have one but they just don't, they didn't even know number for the landline, even if they lived with their parents currently or before leaving home.

I have some other personal involvement with BT outside of this, which shows their trickery and the like, which messed me around for years. Meaning BT's hold of the lines and forcing us all to have a landline, means its has been a nice little earner for BT for decades and could be for years to come.

So how do I/you make calls for free:

a) Saynoto0870 - find generic and free phone numbers and/or use free phone numbers to get to the switchboard and get you through to companies 0p https://www.saynoto0870.com
b) Alexa - FREE calls over the internet
c) Free phone numbers
d) If you have friends/family on same company free calls for up to an hour 0p
e) no calls using a mobile (which I have) and only use as a backup (which I never use) or incoming calls as its linked to many places.

My landline phone bill 0p for years - except we have to pay this line rental at around £200 a year for not using it.

Okay, rant over, lol.

Openreach is a functional division of telecommunications company BT plc, that maintains the telephone cables, ducts, cabinets and exchanges that connect nearly all homes and businesses in the United Kingdom to the national broadband and telephone network.

** OFCOM:
The Office of Communications, commonly known as Ofcom, is the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom. Ofcom has wide-ranging powers across the television, radio, telecoms and postal sectors.
