Did you know that flies live on a liquid diet?

The reason why they live on a liquid diet is because they don’t have mouthparts to chew. They don’t have teeth or a stinger so their mouth absorbs food like a sponge. Flies will regurgitate digestive juices onto solid foods and these juices break down the food into smaller pieces. This allows them to use their proboscis or mouthparts to drink their meal.

Like butterflies, flies can taste food using their feet. This is because their taste receptors or chemonsensilla are located on their lower legs and feet. This is why when a fly lands on a tasty meal, they will often wander around to give it a good taste before consuming it.
