In 2024, a small grassroots group in one of California's fastest-growing counties made conservation history. Protect San Benito helped elect a slow-growth mayor, change the balance of power on the Hollister City Council, and pass a ballot measure protecting agricultural lands and open space.
The lands these victories will protect lie in the heart of the Diablo Range—a little-known haven for plants and animals that is five times the size of Yosemite National Park and still wild enough to support elk, condors, pronghorn, road runners, horned lizards, and mountain lions. Largely unknown to the public, the Diablo Range is one of California’s three most important biodiversity hotspots and is rapidly becoming California's next great conservation story.
In this 18-minute film, a farm worker, a student, some teachers, and others tell the story of their remarkable grassroots victory, proving once again that "a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." (Margaret Mead)
