This new dual-cab 4x4 ute is the first (plugless petrol-electric) hybrid pick-up to enter this traditionally turbo-diesel domain, and the Chinese-built Cannon Alpha Ultra is also luxuriously equipped and keenly priced.

So in many ways it’s a very interesting proposition, but is it actually good enough to pose a threat to stars of the category, such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux?
