Puratoni Bangla Gaan or Old Bengali Songs are a genre of music that is almost on the verge of extinction. Puratani Bangla Gaan or Baithaki Gaan is by and large a part of the Bengali Tappa. This album “Prachin Bangla Gaan” is a compilation of songs composed and sung by Buddhadeb Guha himself.

Buddhadeb Guha is one of the most celebrated fiction writers in Bengali literature. But apart from his identity as a famous writer Buddhadeb Guha has been a superbly talented singer and composer. Buddhadeb Guha is most noted as a singer composer of Puratoni Bangla Gaan. People like Buddhadeb Guha breathed fresh air to this classic art form.

Tappa is a semi classical format that has its origins in Punjab especially Sindh. The gayaki and taankari or the voice modulations are an intrinsic part of this particular style. The Bengali Tappa is a mellowed down version which primarily focuses on the soothing melodic structures and most importantly lyrics. Some of the most noted composers of Bengali Tappa were Nidhu Babu, Dadathakur, Roopchand Pakkhi etc. Tappa gayaki took new shape and over decades became Puratani, a semi-classical form of Bengali songs. This genre was also popularly known as Baithaki Gaan as these songs literally grew from the Baithak Khanas or court rooms of the wealthy elite Babus and the Zamindars.

Buddhadeb Guha was well known for his fondness towards this semi classical genre of music. He has sung and recorded many notable songs from this era. This particular album “Prachin Bangla Gaan” though is a rare collection of Puratoni Bangla Gaan composed by Buddhadeb Guha himself. Some of the songs became hugely popular among listeners.
