Cel Etruscan Goddess Of Earth - Harvest - Fertility - Divination - Omens - Underworld

This week, we’re honoring the Etruscan Earth Goddess, Cel. She is also connected with divination and the underworld, and is thought to be a predecessor to the Roman grain goddess, Ceres. Her name means "Earth, Ground, or Soil", so she represents the harvest and fertility as well.

The Etruscan month corresponding to the Roman September was named Celius after Cel and reflects the time of year when the grain is grown or ripe and ready to be cut. Cel was the Goddess who “makes the grain grow tall”.

She also has connections with the Underworld and with fate, which apparently wasn’t uncommon for Etruscan deities. In her role of Goddess of the Underworld, they believed she could interpret omens; in fact, the Etruscans were known for their working knowledge of divination and augury (looking for omens). They divided the sky into four regions, along a north-south line (called by the Romans the cardo), and an east-west line (the Roman decumanus). The diviner would stand in a sacred space and imagine being at the crossing of these imaginary lines, then face south and observe where the omens could be found in the sky – perhaps flocks of birds or lightning strikes. Depending on what region they occurred, they could tell whether the outcome of the question was a positive or lucky one, or a hostile or unlucky one!

So, whether you use any of those specific divination rituals, you can certainly call on Cel when you need some intuitive guidance for a challenging situation, or when you want a bountiful harvest from your garden. You can also thank her before a meal for her gifts from the earth.

And metaphorically, Cel can prompt you to answer the question “What ideas, projects, relationships, etc. do you want to harvest as you head into the Fall?
