On 21 August 2018 Tuesday, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai & Amma Care Foundation Team rescue a 8 foot long Indian Rock Python (Female) from construction site at around 2 : 30 PM from Rushivan area at Kaju Pada, Borivali (East).

We received a call on PAWS-Mumbai ACF Helpline at around 2 : 00 PM from site in-charge Sanjay Jadhav stating that a huge snake which have very slow movement is hiding under iron rods at construction site, following to which we immediately forwarded said call to all the nearest volunteers. Following to which, Siddhesh Thavre and Sandip Mhapralkar reached the spot and safely rescued the snake. As snake morph was unusual faded color which is uncommon and it treat to see rare mutations in this area. After informing Forest Department the snake was released safely in nearby forest area said Nisha Kunju (Secretary of Amma Care Foundation).

Honorary Wildlife Warden of Mumbai City and Founder of NGO Sunish Subramanian, who visited the spot said as rescued Indian Rock Python’s morph was unusual faded color we have send photographs to Reptile Mutations Expert Sameer Kehimkar, who said “The difference in the quantity of melanin in the skin causes the difference in the color and pattern of the snake, the photographs of specimen has less melanin causing the dark colors to appear faded. Similarly if the melanin cells were more than normal, the snake would have appeared very dark and more black colored patterns would have been seen. These differences are genetic and snake carrying these genes are called hypo or hypomelanistic. The “Hypo” is a recessive mutation that reduces the black pigmentation”.
