Far too often, older adults are forced into heartbreaking decisions no one should ever have to make — like choosing between keeping the lights on or affording the medications they need to survive. These impossible choices don’t just cause stress and hardship — they can mean the difference between life and death. No one should have to sacrifice their health for basic necessities, especially in their most vulnerable years.

Thankfully, ElderSource offers a lifeline through its special assistance fund — a compassionate resource that steps in when older adults face moments of crisis. Whether it’s helping cover the cost of vital medications or keeping the power on during difficult times, this fund brings hope, dignity, and relief when it’s needed most. No one should have to face hardship alone, and thanks to ElderSource and generous donors, they don’t have to.

The EASE Fund (Emergency Assistance Serving Elders) was established in 2008 initially known as the Senior to Senior Fund with a generous donation by J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver through the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida. The endowed gift provides assistance to older adults who have experienced an unexpected financial crisis that is threatening their ability to live independently. Since its inception the fund has eased the financial strain for over 1,100 people – from age 60 to over 100 years old – living in Duval, Baker, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties. The program is supplemented by a generous grant from the Jim Moran Foundation.

The fund has paid for numerous electric bills risking cut-off, rental fees facing eviction, elimination of pests including bedbugs and rodents, new teeth, wheelchair ramps, refrigerators to prevent loss of medicines such as insulin, heating and cooling units, and it goes on and on.

While the funds from the foundations are generous, there are always more clients needing assistance than funds available.
