This book is one of the most intimate accounts of the Holocaust and the persecution of the Jews in most parts of Europe, especially Germany, between 1939 and 1945. It records the turbulent feelings in a Jewish teenage girl in hiding from the Nazi Germans. Anne Frank was born in that historical period when millions of Jews were captured, lynched, murdered in gas chambers and concentration camps.
'The Diary of a Young Girl' is one of the few first-hand accounts of the Nazi torture on the Jews that have survived. This is why this book is important as a historical document. What is striking about this book is that it was written by a thirteen year old girl who did not have any political ideology but simply jotted down the terrible atmosphere that she found herself in.
Anti-Semitism played a major role in Hitler's ideology. He believed that the Jews could never be Germans by blood. His vision was of an all-Aryan empire. He promised the people that he would restore Germany's lost prestige and power. Therefore, he derived sadistic pleasure in inflicting pain upon the Jews. An estimated total of six million Jews died by the end of the Second World War and only a few survived to tell the story of mass lynching, extremism and starvation.
War brings out the beasts in humans because there is always a part in every man that has a desire to kill, conquer and rule. We must see to it that this part of history does not repeat itself. We can do so by being tolerant towards other religions and relinquish the idea of gaining supreme power. We, in our own little ways, can stop war from destroying humanity because no effort, whether big or small, goes completely wasted in the world.
