On the evening of December 15th, 1967, at about five ‘o clock, the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia experienced a bridge tragedy that many believe was caused by a mysterious flying creature called The Mothman.
What is the Mothman?
It's described as a black bipedal, winged humanoid with red eyes that stands about 7 feet tall, with a wingspan of about 10 to 15 feet. After spotting the creature, some people report suffering from extreme fear and psychological distress.
The first reported sighting of The Mothman happened on November 12, 1966 by a group of gravediggers in Clendenin, West Virginia. As they were working, one of the gravediggers spotted something moving. He alerts his coworkers of the movement. When they looked up, they saw what they described as a massive humanoid figure that was rapidly flying from tree to tree. Frozen in shock, they watched the creature fly off over the trees and into the night. They didn't know it then, but they had witnessed a creature that would become notorious in West Virginia history.
Another sighting that is well known is a couple were driving down a dark, isolated road when all of a sudden the girl spots a silhouette of some kind of creature with bright red eyes flying next to them. Even keeping up as her boyfriend sped up to high speeds. It eventually flew off into the night sky, but they strongly believed it wasn’t an owl and they witnessed the popular Mothman.
The biggest disaster happened just days later. It was a cool night on December 15, 1966 in Point Pleasant. The older Silver Bridge, that hovered above the Ohio River, was bumper to bumper as people tried to get home. At about five o clock, the bridge shaked violently right before it plunged into the Ohio River. People scrambled to climb to safety, but unfortunately the accident took 32 vehicles and killed 46 people.
Here is where The Mothman notoriously staples itself in the tragedy. Several people reported seeing an unexplained creature flying in and around the Point Pleasant area before and at the time of the collapse.
After an intense investigation, the official cause of the bridge collapse was a faulty eyebar that corroded and cracked over the years. The Silver Bridge was built in 1928 to help connect Ohio with West Virginia to help traffic move smoother. The Silver bridge was an eyebar chain suspension bridge that should have had maintenance sooner to avoid accidents like these.
Did people see a creature?
Not long after the Silver Bridge collapse, people came forward to see an unknown flying creature gliding around Point Pleasant and the Silver Bridge. Many experts don’t buy into the legend of The Mothman. They believe people mistakenly identify The Mothman for a Barred Owl, which is one of the largest owls that stand around 16 to 23 inches with a 38 to 45 inch wingspan and can illuminate crimson eyeshin . While it’s a far cry of 7 feet tall, experts say that in the dark, being startled, and spotting crimson eyes can be explained as misidentification.
As for sightings, the Mothman phenomenon has seemed to vanish as fast as it came to Point Pleasant.
With many books, television shows and movies created on The Mothman, the town of Point Pleasant has become iconic among conspiracy theorists and paranormal investigators alike. To keep the Mothman Legacy alive, they hold The Mothman Festival every year and a 12-foot metallic Mothman statue sits in town symbolizing the legend of the "Mothman.”
