On a beautiful May morning we set out to do some Alaska fishing with the KTUU Channel 2 News team to chase feisty spring Chinook on the Deshka River near Anchorage, Alaska. Spring king salmon fishing is more hunting than it is fishing because the water is high and dirty and there are not big numbers of fish in the rivers yet.

That time of year water levels can rise and fall dramatically depending on temperatures melting the snow pack which can raise levels a foot or more in a few hours during the day. On this trip we started off with my favorite technique back trolling with a combination of plugs on some rods and divers and spin and glows armed with eggs on the others.

We quickly discovered the water levels changed overnight which slowed the current too much to back troll so we switched it up and started casting mag warts and spinners at the confluence of the Deshka and Big Susitna Rivers. After just a few casts a news crew member hooked a chrome bright Alaska King Salmon.
