Pompey the Great (106-48 BC) is probably best known as the primary opponent of Gaius Julius Caesar during Caesar's Civil War - in which he defeated the great general at the Battle of Dyrrhachium, before suffering defeat himself at Pharsalus in 48 BC.

However, in this video, we focus on the early career of Pompey, who as we shall see was arguably more of a maverick than his later nemesis, rising from his father's subordinate during the Social War (91-87 BC) to command legions of his own and all still in his early twenties!

Today we follow the young Pompey as the protegee of Sulla, his campaigns hunting down Marian leaders in Sicily and Africa, culminating in the Battle of Utica in 81 BC, as well as covering its immediate aftermath.
