The city of Columbus and the community are doing their part to keep Columbus beautiful. By hosting or attending a clean-up event, people are creating a positive impact in their communities.

Over a hundred litter cleanups were held this month. Some of these groups were as small as one or two people to big groups of hundreds of people.

The clean-ups don't start on April 1st for Earth Month but are hosted year-round. So far, over 150,000 pounds of litter have been collected this year, which Aryeh Alex, Executive Director of Keep Columbus Beautiful, says could have been prevented.

"This is a human problem. This is something that happens because someone made a decision to throw something out of their car, not bag their trash, or not cover their load on their vehicle. And when that happens, that trash blows out and becomes litter. And that is something we can absolutely stop."

Litter is not only an eyesore, but it can also impact our environment.

"We estimate that over half of the litter is in our waterways, but it doesn't start with people throwing it in our waterways. It starts with a piece of litter getting thrown out of your vehicle and blowing into the Alum Creek or the Scioto River, and the Olentangy River.

And once it's in the water, it's really hard to get out."

More clean-up events will be held this week, leading up to the Earth Day celebration at Scioto Audubon Metro Park on April 27th.
