As I read through the comments here on the channel, I sometimes get requests that ask me how to complete certain tasks. And recently I saw a question that asked me how to extract the individual .IMG files from a Samsung firmware.

These .IMG files usually aren't used, but I do understand that in certain situations you may need one of these files.

So after doing some research, I figured out how this can be done on Windows and I would like to show you how in today's video.



When you first download the firmware for a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet, it will look like this.
A single file that is compressed in a ZIP file that you will then need to extract.

Once extracted, you will either get this folder here. . .or a collection of files.
It will just depend on where you downloaded the firmware and how it was extracted.

Either way, these are still not the individual firmware files that make up the Android filesystem.
Instead, they are still just a collection of compressed files that each contain their own set of files.


So on Windows, I'm able to get into these files by simply renaming them.
By default, they'll have the .md5 file extension.
But we can edit that filename and just remove .md5 from it.

You could also right click the file, and then click on properties.
Which will then allow you to edit the filename from the top box here.


Once the file has been renamed, and the .md5 file extension has been removed.
You should then be able to open the file up in file compression program.

I use 7zip on my desktop here, and just like that, you can see the collection of individual files right here.
There are other .IMG files in the other firmware files, but the one you're looking for is likely going to be in this AP file.

So just click and drag the file out and you'll have access to that file.
But you may have noticed these are lz4 files, and not simple img files right now.

lz4 is another data compression type that you could extract with a terminal command, or you could use an alternate version of 7zip called 7-Zip ZS.

Either way, you can now extract the contents of your Samsung firwmare downloads on Windows.
