In many parts of the country, 250-thousand dollars will buy you a nice house with a two-car garage.

In New York City, it buys you a parking spot.

That's the going rate for a spot in new buildings in the fashionable Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

At the soon to open 246 West 17th Street, there's already a waiting list for parking spots, according to real estate developer Shaun Osher.

Question: If I bought an apartment here it would cost me around 2 million dollars and then... Answer: Then you'd pay 250-thousand dollars for the luxury of having a parking space in your building, actually they're all sold, so you couldn't get one if you wanted."

There's nothing fancy about the spaces, they look like those in concrete garages everywhere.

Real estate broker Natalie Rakowski just bought a parking space along with her husband, a credit derivatives broker.

She says they are tired of circling the block looking for a space.

"When I told my husband we were going to spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars on a parking spot, he called his lawyer, getting ready for a divorce. But then I explained to him, parking spots in New York City are 5, 6, 7 hundred dollars a month and if you do the math on getting a mortgage on a parking space, and the tax deductions and the fact that you can sell it later on, it suddenly makes sense."

Unlike the rest of the country where prices for all types of real estate are stagnant, in Manhattan
